After the successful market launch of the F5041 and F5141 shoulder mills, Walter is now launching the F5138 – the first porcupine cutter in a refined Walter BLAXX design. Effective performance in this milling category requires the most stable and reliable tool concepts – and it is precisely this requirement that Walter BLAXX fulfils. The user benefits from outstanding performance when profiling and shoulder milling.
There is a long list of special features relating to Walter BLAXX milling cutters. Firstly, the distinctive, specially treated glossy black surface catches your eye. But there is much more to it than an eye-catching appearance – above all, it acts as highly effective protection from corrosion and wear. Performance on the machine then shows how various elements can combine to create a harmonious outcome. As with other Walter shoulder mills, the F5138 porcupine cutter provides feed rates that far exceed conventional examples from this tool class, regardless of whether steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, materials with difficult cutting properties or cast iron workpieces are to be machined.
Four-edged, tangential indexable inserts made of the Tiger·tec® Silver high-performance cutting material and manufactured using the latest carbide technology, are so positioned in the cuttert to ensure a large mass of carbide in the direction of the cutting forces . At the same time, thanks to the design of the insert seat, the tool body has a reinforced core, benefitting from an extremely large material cross-section. The resulting robustness contributes enormously to the overall stability of the cutters. Moreover, the cutting tool material has a unique hardness/toughness ratio. Four available cutting materials – from very hard to very tough – mean it is possible to select the optimum cutting material according to the component material: WKP25S, WKP35S for steel and cast iron, WSM35S, WSP45S for stainless steel and materials with difficult cutting properties. Helically positioned cutting edges with soft cutting geometries and excellent concentricity reduce cutting forces and vibration, to ensure outstanding operational smoothness. Therefore, "Walter BLAXX – powered by Tiger·tec® Silver" is the slogan representing the combination of unique bodies and high-performance cutting edges.
With these features, the tool is suitable for use in all metal-working industries, including general mechanical engineering, the aerospace industry and the automotive industry. The advantages of the Walter BLAXX concept are particularly noticeable when either high volumes of components or high value, machining-intensive components are to be manufactured. In these instances, exceptional cutting performance and long tool life, combined with maximum process reliability, are the highest priority. Walter supplies the F5138 porcupine cutter in a diameter range of 40 to 80 mm with two different cutting lengths per diameter. It is also optionally available with an internal coolant supply to all cutting edges. High production precision ensures minimum missmatch between cuts on wall profiles. The tool is equipped with the same system indexable inserts as the F5141 shoulder mill. Consequently, users can use one insert size for both tools.
