Proven by field tests: Walter Color Select improves tool life

Color Select, the new high-performance cutting tool material from Walter AG, combines optimal service characteristics with simple wear detection. Field tests have shown that tool life has, on average, been increased by almost 100 percent.

The improved microhardness and its toughness particularly add to the cutting tool material's increased performance. At the same time, the coating thickness is thinner than on the previous cutting tool material. A special process was used to mechanically post-treat the coating. The result has now been proven in a range of field tests, including at a fork-lift truck manufacturer and a supplier of die-casting technology. As demonstrated by the results, the tool's tool life increased by 95 percent on average, compared with previous cutting materials, and this is reflected in significantly lower overall costs.

Another feature of Walter Color Select is that the indexable inserts are coloured in standard ISO colours, which gave the cutting tool material its name. This means they are clearly recognisable and thus the risk of a mix-up is significantly reduced. Moreover, the indexable insert is also very easy to recognise in poor light. As a result, it can be quickly established whether the indexable insert is new or whether it has already been used.

"The high tool life, easy selection and a low risk of mix-up provided by Walter Color Select not only lower overall costs, but also lower the error rate when used in production," says Manvinder Singh Saini, Product Manager for Indexable Insert Drills at Walter AG. "Our field tests have fully confirmed the previous laboratory results."

Since the beginning of February, Walter has had the new cutting material for the ISO P application range in stock, with a blue coating and under the product name WPP45C. The abbreviation stands for Walter (W), the first and second ISO P primary applications (PP), the toughness (45) and the Color Select product name (C). To begin with, all full diameters from 12 to 31.99, all 0.5 millimetre increments, reaming-tool pre-drilling diameters, inch dimensions and all best-sellers from the previous WXP45 cutting tool material are available. From October 2013, Walter Color Select WPP45C will be available for the indexable-insert body of the B401x Xtra·tec Point Drills in all intermediate sizes, as for the current programme of the previous WXP45 cutting tool material.

The cutting tool material can be used for ISO P steel materials and is particularly suitable for through holes and blind holes, precision bores, stack drilling and drilling depths of up to ten times the diameter. Possible fields of application for WPP45C using the B401x include general mechanical engineering, pressure containers/heat exchangers (tube and baffle plates), the automotive industry and mold and die making.
